From Cancer to Courage: Micah’s Motivational Story of Strength and Hope
Imagine being a teenager, full of life and ambition, and suddenly finding yourself facing one of the biggest challenges of your life: cancer. This was the reality for Micah, a young man who, like so many teens, had big dreams and a bright future ahead. But for Micah, those dreams were interrupted when he was diagnosed with cancer—a diagnosis that would forever change his life.
For many young people, the battle with cancer isn’t just about surviving the disease; it’s about navigating the difficult road to recovery, often with physical changes that feel overwhelming. But for those like Micah, who undergo limb-sparing surgery—an innovative procedure that saves a limb but removes the cancerous tissue—the fight continues long after the medical treatments end. Micah’s story is one of resilience, strength, and hope, born from the challenges that followed his cancer treatment. It’s a story about how the journey after diagnosis is where true transformation happens.
When Micah was only nine, he was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a type of cancer that affects bone and soft tissue. As a boy of nine, we could all understand how difficult this must have been for him. Previously, all he knew was that his leg hurt at night, but it was later discovered that this pain was caused by something much more serious. There was even a possibility that Micah could lose his leg.
It was a good thing that Micah’s family learned about limb-sparing surgery. This type of surgical procedure allowed doctors to remove the tumor without amputating the limb, enabling the patient to keep his leg.
In June 2015, Micah underwent surgery that would change his life forever. His surgeon, Dr. Michael Neel, removed the tumor along with most of Micah’s left thigh bone and surrounding muscle, replacing the bone with a titanium rod. On top of that, Micah had chemotherapy before and after the surgery to fight the cancer even harder.
Thanks to the surgery, Micah’s leg was saved—but it wasn’t without its challenges. He was left with nerve damage, and at just 10 years old, Micah had to learn how to walk again.
Micah went through physical therapy three times a week—every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. In the beginning, just moving his leg was a huge struggle.
But just over a year later, Micah had made incredible progress—he was walking on his own again. His dad, Jason, held onto hope that one day, Micah would be able to return to the sports he loved.
This is where the real story begins.
Finding Strength After Surgery: Micah’s Journey
Before his cancer diagnosis, Micah was a kid who loved being active. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was his passion, and he was always on the move. “Micah was always running, always busy,” his dad, Jason, said. “It was hard to imagine a life without all that energy.”
But cancer changed everything. After surgery and months of treatment, Micah faced a new challenge: how to live life with a body that was different. The Winkles tried finding new activities for him, but nothing felt right—until one day, they discovered something that would change everything: rock climbing.
Rock Climbing: A New Challenge and a Fresh Start
In 2018, the Winkles were introduced to a rock-climbing gym by filmmaker Tom Shadyac. At first, they were nervous. “We were worried,” Felicia, Micah’s mom, remembered. “We kept saying, ‘Be careful, Micah. Don’t fall!’” But Micah was determined. “It was different from anything I had done before,” Micah said. “Every climb is new, creative, and exciting. It’s not repetitive like other sports.”
Micah found that climbing wasn’t just about the physical challenge—it was an emotional one, too. “I started to feel better, not just in my body, but in my mind,” Micah said. Climbing became a way for him to move past the fear and anxiety that came from his cancer treatment.
From Struggle to Strength: The Power of Persistence
As Micah continued to climb, he grew stronger, both physically and emotionally. His skills improved, and soon, he joined a competitive climbing team. “When I started, I was weak, and I didn’t know what I was doing,” Micah said with a smile. “But the more I climbed, the stronger I got. It taught me to keep going, no matter how hard it gets.”
Micah faced many challenges along the way. Because of the nerve damage in his leg, he couldn’t put full weight on it. This made climbing harder and slower, but he adapted and kept going. “The key is persistence,” he said. “The more you climb, the more you learn and improve.”
A Champion’s Heart: Micah’s Wins
As Micah’s skills grew, so did his passion. In 2021 and 2022, he won the U.S. National Paraclimbing Championships, competing against other athletes with disabilities. He also placed 7th at the World Championships in Moscow and took 1st place in an international competition in 2023.
For Micah, climbing wasn’t just a sport—it became a way of life. “Climbing helped me overcome cancer,” he said. “It gave me something to focus on, something to be passionate about.”
The Lessons We Learned from Micah’s Journey
Micah’s story teaches us a lot about strength, resilience, and the power of finding new paths when life gets tough. Here are some key lessons we can all take away:
- Don’t give up on finding your new passion. When one door closes, another opens. It might take time, but the right activity or passion can help you heal and grow.
- Be patient with yourself. Recovery takes time, and the journey isn’t always easy. Micah didn’t become a champion overnight—he worked hard, faced setbacks, and kept going.
- Strength comes from within. Despite physical challenges, Micah found creative ways to adapt and succeed. The real strength comes from within, in how you approach each obstacle.
- Focus on progress, not perfection. Climbing wasn’t just about winning for Micah—it was about enjoying the process, learning from every climb, and always getting better.
- It’s okay to reinvent yourself. Micah went from being the “cancer kid” to the “climber.” When life changes, it’s okay to redefine who you are and what you’re capable of.
Micah’s journey is a powerful reminder that no matter what we face, there is always hope, always a way to overcome, and always a new challenge to conquer. And with the right mindset, we can turn even the toughest battles into opportunities for growth and transformation.
We hope Micah’s story inspires you to keep fighting, no matter what battle you’re facing. His journey shows us that life is far from over, even when cancer knocks you down. With strength, perseverance, and hope, you can not only survive—you can come out stronger, more resilient, and even victorious.
